Australia Becoming a Beacon of Light for Vegans and Vegetarians
By Space Coast Daily // July 13, 2018
Most people around the world are meat eaters but that is slowly changing. The vegan and vegetarian diet are on the rise without showing signs of slowing down. Australia seems to be one of the countries where this market is not only rising but truly taking over due to a number of factors.
We interviewed Anthony Loggia, Australian entrepreneur who runs Black Leaves, one of most popular tea company down-under.
Australia’s Focus is Changing
It is true that Australia is one of the biggest meat producers out there but that is slowly changing. This is not to say that people do not still love meat, but production in the country is definitely branching out. More farmers are attempting to supply the country with green options, which people are gravitating towards.
This agricultural growth is just one reason why Australia is becoming such a vegan and vegetarian mecca. The growth is not only supporting the global world demand but it is also changing many people’s minds about this particular diet. It certainly helps control prices, making this lifestyle affordable.
Love for Everything Local
Another factor that is helping this market grow in this country is the people’s desire to purchase from local farms. Australia has a number of farms around its land, which makes it easier for people to reach them and buy their product. This love for local produce is probably one reason why agriculture is changing and why this country’s vegetarian and vegan options are getting more diverse.
The people’s willingness to support each other is giving farmers more confidence in this market. At one point, those who wanted to eat in this way couldn’t find some of the ingredients needed to make some of their recipes. This lifestyle requires fresh produce or it can jeopardize taste yet, for a while, that is all that was available to Australians.
Accessibility is Truly Making a Difference
Food manufacturers in Melbourne have taken notice of some of these changes and are making more things available to vegans and vegetarians alike. Getting produce is one thing, but these individuals also need things like condiments or sauces to spice up their meals. One popular condiment amongst lacto-ovo vegetarians is mayonnaise, but they want the real one that was made with real eggs instead of questionable substitutes.
These manufacturers have also made it easier for vegan and vegetarian-based grocery stores or restaurants to open. People who want to eat this way used to find it hard to go to a place and find the ingredients or foods they longed to enjoy but this is no longer true. Now, groceries focus on getting all the things green-loving people might want to eat under one roof.
Animal Cruelty is Losing in Australia
More Australians are starting to feel uncomfortable with animal cruelty and are supporting animal rights. This is a big change and is creating a revolution in several markets in the country. It is easy to see vegans and vegetarians supporting animal rights but others are, too.
It is not uncommon to find a person who is not a vegan or a vegetarian also eating these types of foods more often. People are also attempting to buy their meats from farms where the animals were treated well. This is not to say that there is no more work to be done in Australia to help animals but it certainly shows why this country is slowly becoming one of the biggest vegan and vegetarian-friendly countries in the world.
These are just some of the reasons why Australia is so green-friendly. There is no telling how much the country is going to change as attitudes within the land continue to transform but it is exciting to watch.
