BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Titusville Fire and Brevard County Fire Rescue worked together last week to stabilize a trauma alert patient before handing them off to Health First First Flight.

First Flight is the emergency helicopter transport service of Health First based at Holmes Regional Medical Center and is the county’s only air ambulance serving East Central Florida since 1988. First Flight is operated by Metro Aviation.

In June 2000, First Flight began using an EC-135 twin-turbine engine helicopter. It is equipped with the latest satellite tracking equipment and supports night vision capabilities.

When First Flight’s communications center receives a call, a communication specialist immediately notifies the flight team. The helicopter is dispatched and en route to the scene within minutes, saving precious moments of the patient’s “Golden Hour.”

When transporting patients between facilities, the flight team is in the air within minutes of confirming the destination hospital is prepared for the patient.

The experienced flight crew includes medical personnel with backgrounds in emergency care, critical care and prehospital emergency services.

Additionally, each registered nurse is a state-certified paramedic that may carry board certifications in emergency care, critical care, and flight nursing. Many of our RNs and paramedics carry a Flight Paramedics Certification.

Most First Flight pilots are military-trained with thousands of flight hours logged flying rescue missions. The Medical Director is a pilot and board-certified in emergency medicine, and the Assistant Medical Director has a fellowship in emergency medical services.
