BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Salvation Army of Melbourne will host its sixth annual “Giving Hope Gala” to support the Sue M. Pridmore Center for Homeless Women and Children on Saturday, August 25 starting at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, located at 200 Rialto Place in Melbourne.

The funds from this event help to operate the Sue M. Pridmore Center, the only transitional shelter for women with or without children in Brevard County.

The Salvation Army of Melbourne serves the south Brevard County community, and 84 cents of every dollar raised goes to individuals and families needing assistance in these communities.

This years’ theme is “An Evening of Making Dreams Come True,” and includes live and silent auctions, along with raffles.

Greg Pallone of Spectrum News Channel 13 will be the MC, the guest speaker will be Melbourne Mayor Kathy Meehan, and the Keynote Speaker will be Col. Danny McKnight of “Black Hawk Down.”

“We will be presenting the ‘Humanitarian of the Year’ award to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey,” said Rosa Riordan, director of business development.

“The award is given to an individual in the community who is very proactive in charitable work. Sheriff Ivey is very deserving of this honor. He’s always out there trying to help nonprofit organizations.”

Individual Gala tickets are $65. That’s the “early bird” price if purchased by July 30. After that date the price is $75 per ticket.

The Sue M. Pridmore Center is the only transitional center in Brevard County for Homeless women and children and provides shelter, food, spiritual comfort and emotional support to women, with or without children.

To help those seeking to break free from chronic homelessness and unemployment, the Center offers a wide range of life-skills training to help its residents successfully transition into the local community and become productive, self-sufficient individuals.

Every day, families in the Melbourne area are facing disaster. It’s not a hurricane that threatens their well being, but a lost job, medical bills, and the high cost of living in our community. Sometimes these challenges overwhelm a family and they become homeless.

Mothers with children are especially at risk as they face the challenges of juggling employment, child care, and living expenses. Often they lack the education, support, and mentoring they need to overcome the adversities they face. When they become homeless, these families need more than a roof over their head; they need a support system to build upon.

For women without young children, the challenges they face are different; being displaced homemakers, widows or recently divorced with no prior work history, laid off from long-term jobs only to find they are overqualified to find immediate employment in their career field, etc.

Whatever their challenges are, they still require the same support system to overcome their situations and regain self-sufficiency. The Pridmore Center is the only transitional shelter in Brevard County that will intake a woman without children.

That is why The Salvation Army offers our transitional housing solution for women with or without children to help them break free from chronic homelessness and unemployment.
