BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – This past weekend our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page exceeded 100,000 followers who all partner with us every day to help keep our community safe while also showing their tremendous support for our agency and team members.

There is no doubt that social media has helped change the way we communicate in today’s society, but there is also no doubt that our agency’s utilization of social media and citizen engagement helps prevent and solve crimes like no other communication tool we have ever seen.

When I first took office in 2013, I told our citizens that we were going to deliver Crime Prevention information to them, before they became a victim and not after. I also routinely told our citizens that we were going to reach them in any medium they would allow us to regardless, if it was through in-person presentations at clubs, churches, or civic organizations, through email, through social media or even our new smartphone app that can be downloaded for free through the App Store.

While we often use different and unique approaches in our messaging such as humor when appropriate, programs like “Wheel of Fugitive,” video messaging with our team members and even our K-9’s, our primary goal has always been to engage our citizens as partners with our agency in preventing and combating crime.

And guess what, it worked as we often reach 300,000 people a week with Crime Prevention messages, requests for solving cases, unit profiles, safety tips, wanted fugitives, and even important messages about our Animal Care Center.

Collectively we have lowered our Crime Rate by almost 20% since 2013, a significant drop in our Crime Rate that doesn’t just happen, it only happened because we have an extremely aggressive Law Enforcement agency that targets criminals each and every day and approximately 600,000 citizens who partner with us to prevent crime, get criminals off our streets, and protect their Law Enforcement Officers just as much as their Law Enforcement Officers protect them.

So essentially this video is our team’s way of saying “thank you” for being our partners and for helping be part of the team that makes Brevard County one of the safest places to work, play, learn, and raise a family!
