SpaceX founder Elon Musk is sending engineers to Thailand to assist with the effort to save 12 members of a boys Thai soccer team and their coach from a flooded cave that has trapped the group underground for about two weeks.

The boys, who range in age from 11 to 16, were found Monday after going missing in a flooded network of caves. The rescue effort is being hampered by high water levels that are not expected to subside for weeks and their inability to swim.

“SpaceX team reached out to us today to help connect to Thai govt.,” said Musk on Twitter.

“Our team connected and provided some prep feedback to your team. For pumps, cave has narrowest 70cm cross section and about 5km to 13 guys. For vertical drill, it’s about 1/2 mile down and tricky.”

Musk said his Boring Co., whose main mission is to dig tunnels for transport systems, and SpaceX, will send engineers to Thailand on Saturday to assist with the rescue effort.

The trapped boys could be forced to undertake a perilous escape attempt underwater because a torrent of floodwater is now imminent due to heavy rain.
