Florida Highway Patrol Investigating Deadly Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Crash on US 1 in Melbourne

Fatal crash occurred near Helmsman Place on US 1

Florida Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating a deadly vehicle vs. pedestrian incident that occurred Saturday at 12:24 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Helmsman Place in Melbourne. 

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating a deadly vehicle vs. pedestrian incident that occurred Saturday at 12:24 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Helmsman Place in Melbourne. 

According to Florida Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Lt. Kim Montes, the victim was walking with traffic northbound on US-1 at the intersection of Helmsman Place, in the outside lane, when he was struck by the right front portion of a 2017 Mazda SUV driven by 55-year old Joel Dodds of Rockledge.

According to the report, alcohol was not a factor with the driver of the SUV.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
