Gov. Rick Scott Highlights $450 Million Used To Protect Florida’s Springs

(SUNSHINE STATE NEWS) – On Thursday, Gov. Rick Scott showcased his record in protecting Florida’s springs with more than $450 million used to fund them during his two terms in Tallahassee.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) sent a proposal to the Legislature to use $50 million to protect 35 springs across the state with $32 million of that used for sewer and septic projects.
The governor weighed in on the matter on Thursday as he supported the proposal.
“Florida’s springs are one of our state’s most pristine natural treasures, which is why I’ve fought for record funding,” Scott said. “Every dollar that we’re investing in these projects preserves our iconic springs and helps ensure that we are protecting Florida’s entire environment. I will never stop fighting for our springs and waterways.”
Scott also noted that he has funded spring protection more than any other governor in Florida history, pointing to his support of the Legacy Florida bill to help springs back in 2016 and his administration acquiring more than 10,000 acres of land around springs.
DEP Secretary Noah Valenstein also made the case for springs protection on Thursday.
“The health of Florida’s springs is critical to our state’s environment, economy and communities,” Valenstein said.
“Thanks to Governor Scott and the Legislature, we continue to make record investments in projects to protect these amazing natural resources. We look forward to the Legislative Budget Commission approving this restoration plan that will allow us to continue to partner with Florida’s water management districts and local communities to protect our springs.”
Scott faces term limits this year. He is currently running for the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., in November and is expected to easily win the GOP primary at the end of the month.
