BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Greg Smith, executive vice president for supply chain at Walmart U.S. will headline the fall F. Alan Smith Distinguished Lecture Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne.

Smith will present, “Leveraging the Supply Chain as a Competitive Advantage: the Walmart Story,” followed by questions and answers, from 6-7 p.m. in the Hartley Room at the Denius Student Center.

The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required by clicking here. It is being co-sponsored by the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast.

At Walmart U.S., Smith has responsibility for all product flow and distribution centers, as well as for all domestic and global ocean transportation functions.

His presentation will touch on several elements, including Walmart’s supply chain history, its retail and supply chain strategy and how technology is changing the way customers shop and what the retailer is doing in response.

Walmart, the largest retailer in the world, serves customers and members nearly 270 million times per week.

Prior to his current role, Smith served as a senior vice president of global operations at The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. With more than 30 years of supply chain and operations experience, he has transformed manufacturing, procurement and logistics programs at companies like Goodyear, ConAgra Foods, United Signature Foods, VDK Frozen Foods and Quaker Oats.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. He currently serves on the Global Supply Chain and College of Business advisory boards at the University of Tennessee.

The lecture series’ founder and benefactor is F. Alan Smith. He spent more than three decades in leadership positions at General Motors in the U.S. and Canada, including serving as executive vice president of finance of General Motors and president and general manager of General Motors of Canada, Ltd.

Smith, who now lives in Indialantic, has served on Florida Tech’s Board of Trustees since 1996.

The lecture series, which began in 2007 as the F. Alan Smith Visiting Executive Program, was created to attract corporate executives to speak to students, faculty and community leaders at Florida Tech. At least one executive speaker is welcomed to campus in both the fall and spring semesters.
