BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Florida Tech lit up the Saturday night sky in recognition of the university’s 60th anniversary.
The Founders Day fireworks display was held on the Olin Quad, just off University Boulevard between Babcock Street and Country Club Road.
The event was free to the public and Florida Tech treated the attendees to free ice cream and other giveaways.
Florida Tech began its existence with its first classes held Sept. 22, 1958, as Brevard Engineering College.
Founded by Space Center scientist Jerry Keuper, the “night school for Missilemen” was originally designed to offer graduate degrees for Cape Canaveral workers.
The nonprofit, private university has since rocketed to global acclaim, honored as the #1 national university for international diversity. The university annually serves nearly 10,000 students at the Melbourne campus, at extended studies sites across the country and online.
More than 60,000 alumni live around the world. The university routinely earns prestigious rankings from groups including U.S. News & World Report, Times Higher Education and Fiske Guide to Colleges.
The fireworks display was coordinated by Zambelli Fireworks, one of the largest fireworks companies in the world. CLICK HERE for additional 60th Anniversary event information.
