BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Robyn Hattaway, a Republican candidate for Canaveral Port Authority District 5, along with her husband Aaron and her two sons, Wilson and Davis, are enjoying life on the campaign trail.

They are aware of the issues that Hattaway will focus should she become the next port commissioner for District 5.

“My sons are an inspiration to me,” said Hattaway.

“They are one of the reasons I am running – to protect and improve our environment for them and for generations to come.”

Robyn’s campaign is a family affair as her sons help her often, going door to door and putting out signs. Wilson, who just received his driver’s license, has been doing some of the driving on the campaign trail.

“We stay very busy with school and the campaign,” said 15-year-old Wilson, who attends Holy Trinity Academy.

“One lady that I met with while campaigning, spoke with me for 45-minutes and offered us water. Many of the people we have met have been very kind.”

Davis, 13, who also attends Holy Trinity, has also been helping his mom.

“One lady I met when we were going door to door, showed us that she had already completed her mail ballot and had voted for my mom, so that was awesome,” said Davis.

Both the boys are enthusiastic about the possibility of an aquarium coming to the port.

“I’ve visited the aquarium in Atlanta and it was awesome,” said Davis. “Having one here would be a great attraction to bring people here.”

Like all good moms, Robyn encourages her sons’ enthusiasm, tempered with sound thinking, common sense and plenty of research.

“While we’d love to see an aquarium at the port, I am not taking a formal position on it yet as we do not know what the ask is of the port,” said Robyn.

“The aquarium in Tampa went bankrupt and the county had to bail it out. I will not let that happen here.”

Hattaway also detailed her experiences on the campaign trail.

“The people that we have met and spoken with while going door to door, are concerned about traffic flow and how it will affect them in their daily lives, in and around the port,” said Robyn.

“It is very important that we listen carefully to the residents who live near the port and address their concerns. Community surveys are a great way to receive information and me must listen to our neighbors.”

Another issue that Hattaway will address if elected is the improper use of Kelly Park East for parking by limos and taxis who service the port.

“I will work with Sheriff Ivey to make sure that this is curtailed and that these vehicles are staging in the correct areas.”

Port Authority Commissioners manage the more than $75 million dollar budget, set policy and work closely with the Port CEO, who is charged with handling operations.

Port Canaveral provides roughly $1.1 billion in revenue for businesses providing services at the Port, in addition to providing thousands of jobs and serving as the hub for our thriving tourism industry.

Robyn is a Presbyterian pastor’s daughter and has lived throughout the country so she knows from experience Brevard is very unique.

Her roots are now firmly planted on the Space Coast and they run deep, with family from Titusville to Cocoa Beach and Indian Harbour Beach.

Robyn is adamant about preserving the community’s quality of life and she sees the Port as the area’s greatest asset.

“The port is one of the biggest economic drivers and the future of the county and it is also the gateway to the Indian River,” she said.

“A successful port means jobs in our community and opportunities for small business. It also means no taxes by the Port Authority.”

Port Canaveral, where more than four million cruise ship passengers embark and disembark each year, is one of the busiest ports in the world. Hattaway has pledged to keep the Port safe for tourists and residents alike.

“The Port must ensure the safety of every citizen and visitor,” she said.

Port Canaveral’s connection with the Indian River Lagoon carries significant environmental importance in the rehabilitation of the beleaguered and critically important body of water.

“The Port must be part of the solution and never add more risks,” she said.
