BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech football’s Adonis Davis has been announced as a nominee for the 2018 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award presented by the Manheim Touchdown Club.
The award has been presented annually since 2004 to the most outstanding offensive or defensive lineman in Division II. There are 46 total nominees in the four NCAA Division II Super Regions.
Davis, who has 62 tackles this season as a defensive end, leads the GSC with 13.5 tackles for loss and is second in the league with six sacks this season. He is also tied for the GSC-lead with three forced fumbles.
This season the Columbus, Ohio native solidified his spot in Florida Tech history this season. Davis set the program all-time records for sacks (22.0) and tackles for loss (51.0) this season. He already holds the school single-season records for sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (19.0) after a phenomenal 2017 season.
Following last year’s performance, in which Davis was named First Team All-GSC for the second time, the redshirt-senior also hauled in Don Hansen Football and D2CCA All-South Region honors as well as All-America laurels from five different publications.
To be eligible for the award, the player must be a senior or in his final season of eligibility, an offensive or defensive lineman, and play in 70 percent of his team’s games.
Players are nominated by the school’s sports information directors. Voting for the four super region ballots ends on Nov. 14, and the top two vote-getters in each super-region will advance to a national ballot.
Those eight finalists will then be voted on by sports information directors from all NCAA Division II football-sponsoring schools and conferences.
The Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The winner receives an invitation to the 93rd East/West Shrine Game played on Jan. 20, 2019. He will be presented the award at the Manheim Touchdown Club Banquet in May 2019.
