West Melbourne Police Chief Welcomes New Officers During Swearing-in Ceremony

BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The West Melbourne Police Department welcomed new officers during a swearing-in ceremony last week.

West Melbourne Police Chief Richard Wiley congratulated and welcomed new police officers Corey Casey, William Grandinetti, Brian Liguori and Zachary Martin, who were all sworn in by Chief Wiley on Thursday, December 20, surrounded by family and friends.

“Welcome and best wishes for a long and prosperous career with the West Melbourne Police Department,” said WMPD on Facebook.

The West Melbourne Police Department’s mission focuses on leadership through innovation to meet today’s needs and future challenges:

“This is accomplished through problem-solving partnerships with our citizens and businesses. The West Melbourne Police Department is dedicated to preventing crime, apprehending criminals, servicing the community in an outstanding manner, and expediting the flow of traffic in a safe, calm manner,” said the WMPD Mission Statement.

The West Melbourne Police Department traces its roots back to 1959 shortly after the City was created. Today the department has 48 sworn officers and 10 support staff. The police department is responsible for the protection and safety of West Melbourne’s 21,360 residents as well as the many visitors that come and go through the city every day.

ACCREDITATION

The West Melbourne Police Department applied for Accreditation status in August 2014 through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.

To be accredited WMPD had to come into compliance with over 260 Commission approved standards, mostly relating to life, health and safety.

On June 22, 2016, WMPD appeared before the full Commission – comprised of Judges, Police Chiefs, Sheriff’s and administrative personnel – where the status of an accredited agency was conferred.
