Intense Video Shows Volusia Deputies, Edgewater Police Saving Victim From Burning Wreckage

Rescued Driver Listed in Critical Condition

ABOVE VIDEO:  A Volusia County deputy and an Edgewater Police officer arrive on scene and work together to save a man from a burning SUV during a head-on collision on Interstate 95 early Wednesday morning in Volusia County.  *Warning: This video has been condensed and edited, but it still contains intense footage and audio.

VOLUSIA COUNTY • EDGEWATER, FLORIDA – According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt., Kim Montes, at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Edgewater police officers and Volusia County sheriff’s deputies responded to a head-on collision on Interstate 95. 

According to Lt. Montes, for an unknown reason, a 2010 Honda Insight driven by 23-year-old Devon Standish of Daytona Beach was traveling northbound, in the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 242 in Edgewater.

The vehicle driven by Standish then struck the front of a 2018 Cadillac SUV driven by 22-year-old Logan Aschendorf of Boca Raton.

The impact from the collision caused the SUV to catch fire.  A Volusia County deputy and an Edgewater Police officer arrived on scene and worked together to pull Aschendorf from the burning SUV.

Standish, the driver of the Honda Insight was killed, but these law enforcement officers were able to pull the young man to safety so he could get to a hospital.

Aschendorf, who according to the FHP report, was wearing a seat belt during the crash,  is now in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The crash is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol and an autopsy is pending to see if drugs or alcohol was a factor in the accident.
