BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey held a press conference at the Courtenay Animal Hospital on Merritt Island to provide an update on the recovery of BCSO K-9 “Jake,” information regarding the emergency veterinarian care that saved Jake’s life.
Accompanying the Sheriff was K-9 Deputy Scott Stewart and his partner Jake, a 3-year-old golden retriever.
The drug-sniffing dog was screening passengers boarding for Holy Ship!, an electronic dance music-themed cruise aboard the Norwegian Epic. More than a dozen people were arrested for trying to smuggle drugs onboard.
“From what I understand, (the dog) started having some problems with balance, and did have some type of a seizure incident,” Brevard County Sheriff’s Office PIO Tod Goodyear said.
Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputies linked the drugs to passenger Leslie Bennett, 33, of Montana, who was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance without prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia and equipment.
According to authorities, the drugs later tested positive for ecstasy and amphetamine.
K9 Deputy Jake has recovered and is back on duty at Port Canaveral, playing with his handler Deputy Scott Stewart and showing no ill effects from a severe reaction that he suffered from finding drugs on Bennett.
