District 53 Florida House Representative

REP. RANDY FINE WEEKLY UPDATE: Thank you for listening to my second live update of the 2019 Legislative Session. I’ll be providing an update on all the activities of the last two weeks, and a look at the week ahead. Questions are welcome, so please tune in each week.

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Brevard’s 2019 Legislative Delegation Meeting is in the books! During the meeting, five local bills were discussed, including improving government accountability and election reform.

The event included almost 100 speakers and lasted five hours and 10 minutes without stopping. It was my honor to serve as Chairman this year.

It was awesome to bring this meeting to my district for the first time in recent memory and thanks to Palm Bay for being a great host.

The Brevard Legislative Delegation consists of members of the Florida Legislature including delegation chairman and District 53 Florida House Representative Randy Fine; Senator Debbie Mayfield, R-District 17; Senator Tommy Wright, R-District 18; Representative Rene Plasencia, R-District 50; Representative Tyler Sirois, R-District 51; and Representative Thad Altman, R-District 52.

During my Education Committee meeting this week, we discussed the implementation of the school safety bill.

I’m looking forward to adding my input on how we should revise and clarify the legislation to make sure all of children are safe.

Of concern: local School Board members (as happened in Brevard) that are requiring employees to become Guardians as a condition of employment (the legislative intent was for this to be a voluntary program), and on the flip side, schools that wish to participate in the Guardian program but Sheriffs who refuse to assist them (not happening in Brevard, but happening in 42 of our 67 counties).

On Wednesday, I was in the Health Quality Subcommittee getting an update on the implementation of HB 21, our Opioid Crisis legislation that passed in the last session.

One clear point — if you are getting pain treatment for chronic pain, the bill changed nothing. It only deals with acute pain. If you have had any issues with this, please call my office and we can get the Department of Health to call your practitioner to explain the law.

I was honored to chair my second committee meeting of the Higher Education Appropriations Committee where we are learning about the breadth of programs that Florida offers blind and disabled individuals to help them live their best lives. It is EXACTLY what government should do.

I also had a great meeting with the University of Florida Student Government leadership to hear their priorities for the upcoming session. What a great group of young adults who are going to do our state proud!
