Brevard County GAMEOVER Task Force has arrested 41-year-old Allen Arias, the grandson of an elderly woman who died last month at the hospital.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA –Brevard County GAMEOVER Task Force has arrested the grandson of an elderly woman who died last month at the hospital.

Anita Arias, 87, died on January 21 after not receiving her required medication from her grandson, who she was living with.

Police arrested 41-year-old Allen Arias a nearly month after he dropped off his grandmother at the hospital to receive treatment.

Once Anita arrived at the hospital, medical staff immediately noticed that she was in extremely poor health and had injuries consistent with medical neglect, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Shortly thereafter, Anita died at the hospital where the autopsy results later showed lack of care provided by her grandson led to her death.

The investigation revealed that Allen checked his grandmother out of a rehabilitation facility in early December 2018, at which time she was in fair health and was suffering no medical neglect, according to police.

“At the time of discharge, Allen was provided instructions on how to provide medical care to Anita along with information on how to obtain home health care,” said Melbourne Police Department.

“In the weeks that followed her release, the rehabilitation facility made numerous attempts to follow up with Allen. However, their calls were not answered or returned.”

Police say after Anita’s death, a search warrant was conducted at the home of Allen, his wife, their children, and Anita. There, police found that Anita was given her medication or any care that was required for her condition.

After consultation with the State Attorney’s office, an arrest warrant was obtained for Allen Arias.

Arias was arrested on Thursday by the Brevard County GAMEOVER Task Force and booked into the Brevard County Jail where he is being held on $35,000 bond.
