BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Merritt Island Mustangs girls soccer team suffered a heartbreaking season-ending loss in the Regional Final to Largo by way of penalty kicks Tuesday night.

The reigning back-to-back state champion Mustangs fell 4-3 in penalty kicks after both teams tied 1-1 in regulation and overtime.

The loss for Merritt Island (17-5-1) Tuesday night was their first loss since December 3 when they lost to Rockledge 1-0.

In Matt Cermak’s first season as head coach for Merritt Island, the Mustangs got off to a slow start to begin the season after they started with a 3-3 overall record. However, ever since their 2-0 loss to Titusville on November 28, the Mustangs reeled in 14 wins, two losses and one tie in that span.

“I think we left everything on the field but we could not capitalize on our chances,” said Matt Cermak. “Hats off to Largo, they did well under pressure.”

“We executed our game plan well against a very good Merritt Island team,” said Coach Dan Flynn of Largo. “This was a very hard fought game by both sides and we are so glad to get by them (Merritt Island) in a regional final.”

Largo advances to the State semifinal where they will battle American Heritage Friday night for a trip to the State Championship.
