BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified Robert Schantz of Osprey, Florida as the 100-year-old man who was killed in a multiple vehicle crash at Murrell Road and Wickham Road at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Schantz’s granddaughter Susan Clark, 39, of Melbourne, was driving a 2016 Chrysler van, in which Schantz was a passenger, westbound on Wickham Road in the left lane, and approached a 2010 4-door BMW driven by Brian Giantonio of Connecticut, and Deliece White, who was driving a 1996 Toyota Avalon.

The BMW and Toyota were stopped westbound on Wickham Road in the left lane due to a family of sandhill cranes that were crossing Wickham Road.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, as Clark approached the BMW and Toyota, she swerved to the right to avoid the BMW. Clark then swerved back into the left lane and then noticed the sandhill cranes were in the road.

The FHP report went on to say that the front of Clark’s van struck the rear of the BMW, which was pushed into the Toyota. The front of the van then struck the rear of the Toyota.

Schantz was taken to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center where he later died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Clark and Giantonio were taken to Health First’s Viera Hospital with serious injuries. White received minor injuries and was also taken to Health First’s Viera Hospital for treatment.

This crash remains under investigation, according to Lt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol.
