BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As we awaken to another beautiful Easter morning in Brevard County I am reminded of just how fortunate we are to live in a country where we are free to celebrate our faith in our own way.

As a young kid growing up in Green Cove Springs, Florida, Easter was always a special time for our family as we celebrated the day with our own traditions. First on the list was preparing the eggs the day before, for the big Easter Egg Hunt following lunch on Easter Day.

Back then there were no plastic eggs with money or chocolate, only colored boiled eggs with one specially colored egg being considered the “Prize Egg.”

On Easter Morning my two older brothers and I would awaken to our baskets that the Easter Bunny had somehow left at our house. The baskets were filled with all sorts of treats and if you weren’t careful your good stuff would disappear because your two brothers would try to grab the best stuff from your basket. My favorite were always the “peeps” but of course is there anyone who doesn’t like “peeps?”

Following breakfast it was off to church to celebrate the true meaning of Easter with others in our community. Everyone would arrive dressed in their “Easter Best,” including the ladies in their new Easter dresses and the men in some of the best looking leisure suits you have ever seen.

After church we would head home where it was time for Easter Dinner with our family and then of course the big Annual Easter Egg Hunt that at our house always seemed to turn into an intense competition between me and my two older and much bigger brothers.

I’m proud to say that I won a lot more than I lost, but I’m sure Arthur and Tommy would disagree!

While I often miss those times I know how blessed I am to have new traditions in my life that have been created with my amazing wife Susan Ann, our children and our joined families. I had to smile yesterday as I walked into the kitchen and Susan Ann was coloring Easter Eggs and preparing everything for today.

She was of course using “organic” egg dye, but other than that everything was just as it should be…faith, family, and fellowship!! You know, the true meaning of Easter!!
