Air Force JROTC program is now optional high school elective at Florida Prep

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Unit FL-032 at Florida Preparatory Academy in Melbourne has been honored with the 2018-2019 Air Force JROTC Distinguished Unit Award.
The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools and also in some middle schools across the country.
The Distinguished Unit Award recognizes Air Force JROTC units that have performed well above and beyond normal expectations, and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force JROTC citizen development mission for America.
The objectives of the Air Force JROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals.
Until five years ago, Air Force JROTC program was a mandatory aspect of student life at Florida Air Academy, but following the school’s transition to Florida Prep, the program became an optional high school elective.
Enrollment is open to high school students who are in the 9th to 12th grades.
Air Force JROTC is located in close to 900 high schools across the United States and at selected schools in Europe, in the Pacific, and in Puerto Rico. Enrollment includes more than 120,000 cadets who do over 1.6 million hours of community service each year.

Participating students take their involvement seriously and work diligently to represent their unit and the school to their highest ability.
“That hard work has continued to pay off as they have now earned the Distinguished Unit Award for five straight years,” said Florida Prep spokesperson Jeanette Middleton.
While the focus of the program is not to earn awards, the Florida Prep unit has shown itself time and again worthy of recognized, exemplifying the standards required of an AFJROTC cadet.
