BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – It’s a fact. Some people just know where they are going and understand how to get there.
Such is the case with Ryan Kirschner, a junior at Florida Prep and a Cadet Major in the Florida Prep AFJROTC unit.
This summer he will be one of a select few taking their place in the Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) at the United States Military Academy West Point.
Mirroring the extremely rigorous acceptance process for U.S. Military Academy cadets, SLE is highly competitive and only open to high school juniors.
More than 6,000 applicants contend for just 1,000 annual slots. The benefits of participation far outweigh the effort that goes into the application process.

SLE provides a one-week immersion experience into the life of a cadet with complete immersion in academics, military and social life from all angles.
This includes living in the cadet barracks, dining in the cadet mess hall, and participating in intense military training and athletic activities.
One week full of action, this program serves as a great preview of the challenges a cadet will experience and ultimately overcome as a West Point Cadet.
“I loved the school,” he said, “and I’m looking forward to the summer and hopefully a great career in the military.”
Ryan, a JROTC student for the past three years at Florida Prep, is already familiar with the West Point campus after he recently made a visit with his parents.
“As a leader and motivator, Ryan’s experience will be invaluable to his fellow cadets and we look forward to learning more about SLE when Ryan returns to Florida Prep as a senior this fall,” said Florida Prep spokesperson Jeanette Midleton.
