According to Florida Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Lt. Kim Montes, Griffis was struck by a Hyundai Elantra driven by Lisa Mari Ekstrom, 48, of Merritt Island.
Lt. Montes said that Ekstrom was traveling southbound on U.S. Hwy. 1, approaching the intersection of High Point Road and Griffis was crossing U.S. Hwy. 1 from west to east.
“The bicycle did not have any head or tail lamps and did not cross at an intersection,” said Lt. Montes.
The front of the Elantra struck the victim.
Lt. Montes said that Ekstrom fled the scene and a witness followed her and called 911. A Brevard County Deputy then stopped Ekstrom as she was pulling out of a gas station.
Troopers arrested Ekstrom and charged her with leaving the scene of a fatal crash involving death.
