CBD Oil for Migraines: Does It Work?
By Space Coast Daily // July 4, 2019

CBD oil is cannabidiol extracted from the hemp plant, part of the cannabis family of plants. CBD is considered a cannabinoid compound and it has been touted as the best thing since sliced bread, but are all the claims true? Can it really help with migraines?
Let’s take a look at some of the facts and try to make sharpen the focus of what is real when it comes to CBD oil.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is a phytocompound, extracted from cannabis in several different forms and in different ways. One of the most common extraction methods is CO2 extraction, where the plant matter is placed in a sealed chamber which is pumped full of CO2.
When the CO2 is removed from the chamber, the CBD clings to it and is extracted, along with several other cannabinoids that are also present.
Industrialized hemp is used for this type of CBD extraction because the content of THC Is very low and the final product must have .03% or less THC.
THC is tetrahydrocannabinol and it is the psychoactive compound responsible for the effects of becoming high when using marijuana, also in the cannabis family. Marijuana naturally has higher concentrations of THC than does hemp.
How Does It Work?
The body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that actually produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. Endo means within or inside.
The ECS seems to be responsible for overseeing metabolism, pain management, the immune system function, and potentially more things. Scientists are still studying the ECS. So far, every animal studied also has an ECS, with only amphibians left to test.
The ECS is made-up of enzymes which prompt the body to manufacture endocannabinoids. There are also two types of cannabinoid receptors, known as CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are only located in the brain, whereas CB2 receptors might be found anywhere in the body.
When an outside cannabinoid from a plant, known as a phytocannabinoid, is introduced into the body, it immediately goes looking for the ECS. If it is a small enough molecule, such as CBD or THC, it can bind with a receptor.
CBD binds with CB2 receptors but THC goes straight to the brain and finds the CB1 receptors. This totally explains why THC has an impact on cognitive function that it does.
When CBD binds with a CB2 receptor, the chemical process causes a lipid to be formed. This tiny lipid is released into the neural network. The neural network is the pathway on which your thoughts travel, as well as chemical impulses that are being sent as messages from the body to the brain.
When the lipid goes out to the neural pathways, it polishes the pathways with a protective coating which acts like armor to protect the pathways and keep them healthy.
This improves focus and memory. This is why people who take CBD remark about improved focus and thought processes. Those with ADHD have seen improvement when taking CBD for the same reasons.
By default, the lipid is in the way of the impulses attempting to reach the brain with messages, such as pain or emotional triggers. When the impulses are blocked from reaching the brain, they cannot be acted upon as the brain is clueless.
Therefore, when there is no response, there is no pain. It is never acknowledged and therefore doesn’t exist as far as the brain is concerned.
When it comes to migraines, CBD can help block the triggers that start the migraine. Much research is still being done on migraines and using CBD oil for them, but CBD is known to help with relaxation and pain management.
Since no one is quite certain what triggers migraines, CBD is something that can work to block the signals without use knowing exactly where they were coming from, because it blocks them all.
Don’t worry, you are not completely unaware of your body and sensations. It isn’t like that. CBD purely works for pain, negative thought patterns, and it also boosts the immune system by triggering it to get to work.
CBD has been tested in many different laboratory settings and it has been found to have analgesic properties to help reduce inflammation and pain.
It also has none of the side effects that analgesics may. For more information on how CBD works with migraines, you may also want to visit The Mental Meds. They have more information as well.
Migraines – Will it Work?
The jury is still out on conclusive evidence. There is little data in official research settings because very few experiments have been allowed to take place with actual humans. Lab animals have largely been studied for pain response before and after CBD administration.
The human testing has been in question and answer form, through interviews. Scientists are looking forward to being able to do actual clinical trials soon. Only then will we have proof to make claims. Until then, feedback from people has been good.
Doctors are still very much on the fence, preferring not to make any claims until there is more research to back them. If you have migraines, it may be in your best interest to try CBD oil. Only you will be able to make the best decision for yourself at this point.
