BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – A call to assist with what at the time appeared to be a possible overdose and suicide attempt ended with the successful Cocoa police K9 deployment and track to find the person.

Cocoa Police Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez said that on Friday, July 5, at approximately 12:30 a.m., K9 Officer Brian Delos Santos and K9 Kyra responded to the 600-block of Johnson Street to assist with the search for a woman who reportedly took a bottle of prescription pills after arguing with her fiancée.

“During the argument, the woman made suicidal statements and left her home on foot,” said Martinez.

“After obtaining a description of the woman and her last known direction of travel, Officer Delos Santos deployed K9 Kyra to track the area. Kyra tracked one block east to a home and located the woman hiding in a backyard shed.”

The woman came out of hiding when she saw the officer and the dog and was not harmed. She was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.

“It was a good track,” said Officer Delos Santos. “It didn’t’ take long at all for Kyra to lead me right to where we needed to be in order to find this woman and get her the help she needed.”

A 3-year-old German Shepard from Hungary, Kyra and joined the Cocoa Police Department in July of 2018.

The K9 is trained to serve in patrol for tracking, apprehension, drug detection and is also assigned to the SWAT team and is the department’s first and only female K9.

Kyra was donated to the city by the Grace Roberti Foundation.
