Why An Espresso Is a Popular Coffee Option
By Space Coast Daily // July 26, 2019

In every part of the world, you’ll always find coffee incorporated into everyone’s lifestyle due to the versatility of this beverage.
Coffee doesn’t only come in one variant, but it provides an array of options to choose from depending on your mood and taste. Indeed, these are fair enough reasons to always add coffee to your routine as your morning booster or go-to drink.
Among the different variants of coffee in the market, the espresso is rapidly gaining its popularity in cafés and restaurants around the world.
Espresso—a thick coffee obtained by placing ground coffee beans at high pressure of nearly boiling water—possesses a full-body, bittersweet taste, and creamy texture. Now, it’s time to understand what the hype is all about. Why is espresso a popular coffee option across the globe?
Simple to Make
Even though espresso machines are specially created to make espresso, the espresso-making process is actually simple and easy. In fact, you can make espresso at home while relaxing, and you can do this even without an espresso machine.
There are three available methods to make espresso without a fancy espresso machine:
- Moka Pot
-
- To make espresso with Moka pots, get an excellent measure of finely ground particles. The finer the particles, the better. Pour clean water at the bottom of the pot and the coffee grounds into the built-in filter. Place the pot on a burner and set it to medium heat.
- One of the keys to making good espresso is finding the perfect ratio of the coffee grounds to water. There are different brew ratios of espresso, but the best and most preferable ranges are from 1:1 to 1:2.
- Now, let the Moka pot do its job and wait for the top part to be entirely filled with coffee. Perfecting this process can be quite challenging but you’ll eventually get used to it.
- French Press
-
- Grind your coffee into the finest particles. Compared to Moka pots, you should add more coffee as a French press doesn’t create the foaminess that a Moka pot can make. Add the coffee grounds into the press.
- Now, it’s time to let the coffee release its flavors. Pour hot water into your coffee grounds and let it settle for half a minute. After the allotted time, pour the remaining water over the grounds, close the lid, and let the coffee soak for 4 minutes.
- For the best part, press the plunger using an easy and steady pressure, until it reaches halfway. Then release the pressure to the top and press it once again all the way down with constant pressure.
- AeroPress
-
- Last but not least, using the AeroPress is probably the best option to make your espresso without a coffee machine. An AeroPress can achieve the exact caffeine level and flavor of an espresso machine, but it will feel rougher in texture.
- Prepare your AeroPress and attach filters inside the drain cap. You can use two or more filters depending on your preference, as this will slow down the flow of water during pressing.
- Measure the right amount of your coffee grounds and pour them into the filter. You can add more coffee grounds as much as you’d like, but it gets more concentrated. Add water, heat it to 200 degrees, stir, and push the plunger with sharp adequate pressure.
Espressos aren’t only made in expensive coffee shops and cafés, but you can make it in your own home even without having an expensive espresso machine. You can achieve the same quality, taste, and caffeine content of brewed espressos through these options.
Extremely Versatile
Coffee has come a long way over the years. Through discovery and the application of different techniques in coffee making, the first commercial espresso machine provided people with a new device that is both economical and easy to use.
People love espresso as they can make it in different ways by adding other elements to create more variations of taste and texture. Espresso is used as a base of various coffee drinks, such as:
- Ristretto: A more intense and deeper flavor is brewed on a ristretto because it is extracted with only half the amount of water used by a regular espresso.
- Lungo: This coffee drink is the exact opposite of ristretto, and brewed with twice the amount of water in an ordinary espresso.
- Doppio: Doppio is a coffee drink that is twice that of an espresso.
- Americano: Espresso is added into hot water to lessen its crema. Take note that water should be poured first before the espresso.
- Macchiato: The word “macchiato” means “marked” in Italian, indicating that macchiato is an espresso marked with a small amount of steamed milk.
- Cappuccino: Except for water, espresso can be spiced up with steamed milk and foam to make cappuccino. Usually, it is also sprinkled with cinnamon or chocolate.

Good for the Health
Most people only drink espresso to boost their energy, as that’s what coffee primarily does to the body. However, drinking an espresso can also present multiple health benefits, mainly to the nervous system.
It can sharpen your memory to help your brain retain and recollect more information than its normal capacity. The caffeine content in espresso is what helps your brain achieve long-term memory. A study found out that having two cups of espresso is the perfect amount for long-term memory.
For people struggling with weight gain, espresso can also contribute to your weight-loss routine as it contains only 3 calories per ounce without any sugar or cream.
Moreover, a cup of espresso boosts your energy and contributes in your exercise routine, wherein you will feel less exhausted. It can also minimize muscle pain and damage that you can get from a workout.
Conclusion
Espresso is favored by many people due to its simplicity, versatility, and contribution to overall health and wellness. While drinking one to two cups of espresso is great and manageable for the body, exceeding the limit can lead to detrimental effects.
Overconsumption of coffee means that your body is ingesting too much caffeine than it can handle daily, which should only be 400 milligrams per day. As caffeine increases the heart rate and blood pressure, health complications may arise, so always drink in moderation so that your love for espresso wouldn’t turn into a nightmare.
