Beat the Heat, Staying Cool in Brevard This Summer
By Space Coast Daily // August 23, 2019

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard is blessed with year-round warm weather. It’s great for the garden, health, and getting outdoors, but when it gets to the height of summer, all that heat can be a little oppressive.
Hopping into the car leaves you stuck to the seat, then once the air conditioning has cooled the car down, you’re back out into the heat again.
Temperatures at this time of the year along with high humidity make running even the smallest errands a sticky affair.
Are you starting to wish for winter again? Try to hang in there – these are our top tips for keeping cool this summer.
Take the Plunge
Sometimes being on dry land is just too hot to bear and it’s on days like those when Sliding Rock offers a brilliant escape plan.
Unlike some of the waters around this area, which can be a little dangerous thanks to our reptilian friends, the water here is very safe and manned by lifeguards during peak hours.
Sliding Rock is a 60ft natural slide that can be found by the waterfall in Pisgah National Forest.
The rock is super slippery owing it to the waterfall that pushes some 11,000 gallons of water per minute over its surface, gently eroding it into the smooth surface it is today.
It’s just $3 to enter the area of the park, and even if you don’t plan on sliding yourself, just watching is great fun! The water at the bottom is chilly, and perfect for cooling down.
Do keep in mind that the pool at the bottom is 7 feet deep in parts, so only those who can swim are allowed to slide. You can come at any time during daylight hours.
However, lifeguards, changing rooms and other facilities are only available from 10 am until 6 pm.
Cool Down at Kelly’s
When it’s hot and humid outside, it can be blissful to get outdoors and go swimming, but sometimes the only thing you want is a bit of air conditioning.
Kelly’s Burgers & Beer is a great little comfort food joint that serves juicy burgers, cold beer and an array of entertainment as well.
“Not Quite Vegas” poker club holds many of their free to enter tournaments there, which are great for beginners and avid players alike.
The group is amiable and welcoming to newcomers and make a real effort to be inclusive; there’s a feeling of camaraderie, which is a little more special than most US poker rooms.
What’s even better is that currently it’s “double your wins” at Kelly’s, so a little bit of money can stretch a pretty long way!
Are you looking for a way to spend that hard-earned cash? Take a look at the menu and treat yourself to something yummy.
We mentioned before that the burgers are great, big and juicy and served with homemade fries and a fresh pickle. If you fancy trying something slightly different, try the pretzel balls served with a beer cheese dip.
It’s salty and delicious, everything you’d want from a bar snack.
