HURRICANE DORIAN 11 A.M. UPDATE: Although NHC Track Shows Storm Staying Offshore, Brevardians Need to Stay Vigilant

SPACE COAST DAILY TV HURRICANE UPDATE: Space Daily’s Chris Bonanno discusses the latest advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center on Hurricane Dorian as of 11 a.m. Saturday. The National Hurricane Center reported at 11 a.m. Saturday that Hurricane Dorian’s forecast path has shifted east away from Brevard County, and now predicts the center of the storm will strike the Carolinas, or perhaps head east back into the Atlantic.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Hurrican Center reported at 11 a.m. Saturday that Hurricane Dorian’s forecast path has shifted east away from Brevard County, and now predicts the center of the storm will strike the Carolinas, or perhaps head east back into the Atlantic.

Hurricane Dorian’s wind speed has increased to 150 miles per hour at 11 a.m. Saturday and are expected to strengthen to 155 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center said that Dorian’s intensity strengthened Friday into a Category 4 hurricane and is forecast Friday at 11 p.m. to hit the Brevard County coast packing 140 mph winds.

Brevard County residents need to stay vigilant even though, after being all over the map the last several days, the “spaghetti models” that predict possible storm paths now almost all predict no landfall in Florida.

In preparation for Hurricane Dorian, and due to the uncertainty of the path of devastating winds and storm surge, a mandatory evacuation order has been issued for parts of Brevard County.

“Although the path of Dorian has shifted, the entire East Coast is still vulnerable to significant impacts,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “Residents in East Coast counties should continue to monitor local reports and stay vigilant.”

The following residents should START evacuating on Sunday, September 1 at 8 a.m.:

• Those who live on the barrier islands, including areas from Kennedy Space Center south to the south beaches, and Merritt Island,
• Those in mobile homes or manufactured housing,
• Those in low-lying, flood-prone areas,
• Those with special medical needs such as electrical dependence.

Shelter details are still being finalized and will be announced on Sunday, September 1.

Public shelters will be made available for the general population, families wishing to bring their pets and those with special medical needs.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-189, declaring a state of emergency for counties in the path of Hurricane Dorian.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is urging residents to stockpile a week’s worth of food and supplies and said the state has 819,000 gallons of water and 1.8 million meals ready for distribution.

“It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely,” said DeSantis.

“Every Florida resident should have seven days of supplies, including food, water and medicine, and should have a plan in case of disaster. I will continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian closely with emergency management officials. The state stands ready to support all counties along the coast as they prepare.”
