BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Alejandor Mendez was awarded the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office “Great Kid” Award on Tuesday for his incredible act of honesty that occurred when he found a $100 bill on the playground.

Alejandor, who is a student at Endeavour Elementary Magnet School in Cocoa, was nominated for the award by Cocoa Police School Resource Officer Branda Marchica after he turned in a $100 bill that he found on the playground.

Alejandor told the staff at Endeavour that he knew someone was probably looking for it and needed it, so he wanted to do the right thing.

As it would turn out Alejandor was exactly right as the mom of another student at the school with very limited flexibility in her budget, had reported losing the money that was subsequently returned to her because of Alejandor’s actions.

The “Great Kids” Program was started to recognize outstanding kids in our community who constantly show respect for their peers, help others in a time of need, maintain a strong academic standard and represent themselves, their family and their school with great character and pride.

All too often in today’s society, we focus our resources and time on those that don’t do it right, while kids who go above and beyond tend to go unrecognized.

The “Great Kids” Program is facilitated in partnership with School Resource Officers and Deputies throughout Brevard County and Brevard Public Schools.

It was truly an honor to present Alejandor with his “Great Kid” plaque for the actions he exhibited that day in doing the right thing.

In fact, my wife Susan and I were so moved by Alejandor’s act of kindness that we personally wrote him a check for $100 so that he could enjoy it any way he chose and to thank him for just being himself…a great and very humble kid!

Please join me in congratulating Alejandor for his recognition today and also in commending his parents and teachers for teaching him the value of great character, honesty and of being a great kid.
