BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Florida Highway Patrol Troopers were on the scene of a crash that occurred Thursday morning on South Tropical Trail in which two males fled the crash scene on foot and two people were transported to the hospital.
According to FHP Lt. Kim Montes the incident unfolded as a 2019 Ford Explorer, driven by a yet to be identified 29-year-old male, was traveling southbound on South Tropical Trail on Merritt Island and attempted to pass a 2002 Toyota Tundra driven by Justin Neil Kennard, 36, of Cocoa.
“The driver of the Ford Explorer attempted to pass the Toyota Tundra in a no-passing zone, at a very high rate of speed,” said Lt. Montes in a release.
“The right side of Explorer struck the left side of Tundra.”
Due to the collision, Kennard then lost control of his Tundra pickup and traveled onto the right shoulder.
The front of the Tundra then struck a tree and the undercarriage of the pickup truck traveled over a large rock.
The Ford Explorer continued out of control and traveled onto the shoulder and the front of the vehicle then struck a concrete barrier wall located at 10830 S. Tropical Trail.
The Ford Explorer then continued south and crashed into a utility pole, a fire hydrant and a fence.
“Two male subjects from the Ford Explorer then fled the scene in an unknown direction on foot,” said Lt. Montes.
Rochelle Dis Ja Williams, 27, a passenger in the Ford Explorer, received minor injuries and was taken to Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical center for treatment.
Kennard and his passenger, 26-year-old Franc Justin Lee of Cocoa, both received minor injuries. Kennard was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The identity of the men who fled the scene on foot has not yet been released and the crash remains under investigation.
