BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County high school football teams are well-represented in would-be playoff positions in the first rankings of the season that were released by the FHSAA on Tuesday.
The rankings are important in that they determine who makes the playoffs and who has home-field advantage in the playoffs. The top eight teams in each region in Class 5A-8A make the postseason with the top six teams in each region in classes 1A-4A also doing so.
The rankings are organized based upon a formula that includes a team’s winning percentage, their opponent’s winning percentage and their opponent’s opponent winning percentage.
All district winners are seeded 1-4 in each region for the postseason.
Rockledge is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and fifth overall in the state after impressive victories over Viera, Port Orange Atlantic, Tallahassee Lincoln and Ware County (GA).
Cocoa is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, Region 2 with quality wins of their own against Viera, Heritage, Belle Glade Glades Central and Daytona Beach Mainland. Space Coast is ranked 5th and Astronaut 7th, though the Vipers and War Eagles will face each other Friday night.
Merritt Island is ranked at No. 9 in Class 5A, Region 3. Palm Bay is ranked 14th.
Viera is ranked No. 7 in Class 7A, Region 2 while Melbourne is ranked at No. 8.
