BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Hello everyone I’m Sheriff Wayne Ivey of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, and this afternoon I wanted to share with everyone a very disturbing fraudulent scam that is taking place in our community as well as other communities across the country.

While there are all sorts of different scams out there, this one is very concerning as it involves someone who identifies themself as a Deputy Sheriff with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and then informs the intended victim that they have a warrant for their arrest for something such as missing jury duty or a subpoena for court.

The perpetrator will either leave a message with a call back number or will directly then advise the intended victim that they have a warrant for their arrest and in order to not be arrested they must pay a fine which is generally in the amount of two thousand dollars.

These types of telephone calls are well-documented scams with the sole purpose of financial gain through fraudulent pretenses and are not associated with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in any way.

In a number of the cases we have recently seen over the course of the past few days, the perpetrators identifies themselves as either Chief Demorat or Deputy Freeman while instructing the victim to obtain Prepaid Gift Cards in the amount of the alleged fine and provide the card numbers over the telephone to the perpetrator.

In one case they actually maintained constant contact with the victim while she traveled to the bank, withdrew $2,000.00 from her account, traveled to the store to obtain the cards and then provided the requested cards numbers to the caller.

The perpetrators of this type of criminal activity are preying upon the emotions and fear of the intended victim for their criminal gain.

In addition, please remember that while the perpetrators are using the actual names of Deputies from our agency such as Chief DeMorat and Deputy Freeman our team members would NEVER make such a call and would never under any circumstances instruct you to go to your bank to withdraw money or obtain credit cards.

Simply put…neither our agency or any other Law Enforcement Agency conducts business in this fashion so please do not respond to a call of this type.

Should you or a family member receive a similar call, please immediately disconnect from the telephone call and contact our agency or your local Law Enforcement agency to report the matter.

By alerting Law Enforcement to the attempted criminal activity we can further our current investigation and also provide awareness to our community about the criminal trend.

Again, please know that our team members do not make calls of this nature or instruct you to address a criminal or civil issue in this fashion.

As always thank you so much for partnering with us to prevent crime in our community and for keeping in mind that “if you see something you should say something!!”
