Rankings Evaluate International Universities That Prioritize Research
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – In what is described as the most comprehensive assessment of research universities worldwide, Florida Tech has been recognized in the 2020 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities.
The magazine evaluated “the world’s top 1,500 universities” for 2020, up from 1,250 last year, based on academic research and reputation. Just half of those ranked were included in the final tally, and of those, just 249 were U.S.-based schools.
“As the Best Global Universities rankings continue to expand in number of schools and subjects to fulfill the needs of prospective students, we remain consistent in our mission to evaluate schools around the world on their research,” said Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News.
“A major emphasis on academic research is what sets this methodology apart from our other university rankings.”
The new edition evaluated schools in 81 countries based on 13 indicators that measure their academic research performance and their global and regional reputations. Florida Tech excelled in several, being ranked No. 12 in International Collaboration – Relative to Country, and No. 29 in Percentage of Highly Cited Papers Among the Top 1 Percent Most Cited.
Florida Tech was also ranked in the top third among 750 schools on the more selective list of specific subject matters in the Subject Rank for physics, which includes particle and nuclear physics, mathematical physics, quantum physics and theoretical physics.
“These well-regarded universities from around the world have shown strength in producing research in a wide range of topics related to physics,” the magazine said. “These are the world’s best universities for physics.”
Florida Tech was one of just eight Florida-based universities on the 2020 list.
