BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Twenty-three AVID 8th graders from Stone Magnet Middle School collaborated with more than 300 Palm Bay Elementary students in 14 classrooms to engage in an AVID Deployment Day.

The Stone AVID students created lessons to teach to Palm Bay Elementary students in grades 3-6.

These lessons included elements of the five pillars of AVID, WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading).

The middle schoolers worked with the elementary kids to demonstrate the importance of being organized, binder organization and the proper use of an agenda/planner; asking good questions, utilizing Costa’s Levels of Thinking; working collaboratively for a common goal, activities included “Save Sam” and the “Marshmallow Challenge”; and marking and annotating the text (interacting with the text) to use for a Socratic Seminar.

Stone’s AVID students were excited to engage with their younger counterparts and utilize public speaking and collaboration skills they have learned in AVID.
