UPDATE: Titusville police arrested Dustin Matthew Adkins

TITUSVILLE POLICE UPDATE – Parrish Medical Center notified the Titusville Police Department Saturday that a pediatric patient had been brought to the emergency room with a gunshot wound.

Titusville police arrested Dustin Matthew Adkins, 34, of 23 Garnet Avenue in Titusville, and charged him with Aggravated Child Neglect With Great Bodily Harm; Violation of Felony Probation; Possession of Firearm By Convicted Felon; Possession of Ammunition by Convicted Felon.

According to Titusville police spokesperson Amy Matthews, officers and detectives responded to both the hospital and a wooded area east of State Road 407 and north of I-95 where the victim had been reportedly shot accidentally by another juvenile.

“After a lengthy search, officers found several firearms on a trail hidden under a disposed tire in the wooded area,” said Matthews.

“The investigation to this point has revealed that four young juveniles were with an adult relative in the woods shooting firearms. At some point, the adult left the children unsupervised and a nine-year-old girl was shot by a sibling accidentally while shooting at a target.”

The suspect is on Probation for Manslaughter involving the shooting death of a child.

“It is outrageous that this adult provided firearms and ammunition to these young children,” said Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson, “especially given his past arrest and conviction.”

Adkins has been booked into Brevard County Jail.

The victim was critically injured and later transported by helicopter to a hospital in Orlando.

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – WESH 2 reported that Titusville police were called to a hospital after a 9-year-old girl was accidentally shot by an older sibling during target practice in the woods off of State Road 407, just east of I-95.

Titusville police are currently investigating what led up to a child being shot Saturday.

“This is definitely a usual case because you have a juvenile who has been shot and instead of calling the police or notifying 911 they went immediately to the hospital,” said Titusville Police Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson.

“It is very concerning to us. We need to find the weapon that was used and get to the bottom of what happened and then determine what charges could be applicable.”
