Biggest Upsets in the NFL this Season
By Space Coast Daily // January 22, 2020
One of the great things about sport is a shock result. When an underdog manages to punch up and grab a surprise win against a top team, it is one of the most satisfying things in the world – especially if you had backed the underdog.
If you have your Super Bowl 2020 squares template all ready, then you will be well aware of how things can surprise you in the NFL. With all that being said, we have put together our list of the most shocking results from the season so far.
The Ravens destroy the Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have been a side who can be classed as average at best for a long time now. This result against the Baltimore Ravens cemented their position as bottom feeders for the coming season.
What makes it worse is that it was during the first game week that this destruction took place. Again, no-one expected the Dolphins to be winning this game, but they did expect them to put up a fight. That did not happen.
The 59-10 scoreline left Dolphins fans with no expectations for the season ahead. The fact that this took place on their home turf just made the whole experience even worse. Ravens fans had high hopes for the season ahead, but, of course, getting your hopes up when it comes to sport is always a bad idea.
The Patriots throw away top seed against the Dolphins
It seems that by game week 17, the Dolphins had managed to finally build up some fight and fire after their embarrassment against the Ravens. This time, they used it to stop the New England Patriots from taking the top seed in the NFC by beating them even when they had nothing to play for.
Professional pride can sometimes cause players to push themselves even harder than usual when they have nothing to lose. It was an example of this when the Patriots and the Dolphins battled it out.
What made this result even more impressive was that the Dolphins came from 17 points down to rescue the win. This game was such a shock that stats actually came out that it was the biggest turnaround to go against Tom Brady in his whole career.
He had previously won all 30 games when he had been 14 or more points in front. That this came against one of the weakest sides in the NFL just made it even more of a huge shock.
The Chiefs blitz the Texans to come back from a big deficit
The Houston Texans looked to be booking their place in the AFC final this past week, but the Kansas City Chiefs had other ideas. Losing by 24 points, it looked like they were down and out after a disastrous first quarter.
However, people should know better than to think that a team are out of it when it comes to football. The Chiefs responded with one of the most impressive uninterrupted scoring sequences seen in years.
Patrick Mahomes broke some records of his own in the game by becoming just the fourth player ever to create four touchdowns in a single quarter. The Chiefs booked their place in the AFC final with this impressive performance and it shocked everyone, especially Texans fans who were already getting themselves ready for a place in the final.
The fact that Mahomes made the touchdowns outside of a regular link was also impressive. He managed to find different players with almost every pass, showing that it is not just a good sense of timing with a single player that he enjoys, but that he also has the vision and ability to find a pass whenever someone is in space.
Will the Super Bowl provide an upset?
The Super Bowl by definition cannot provide a true upset. It is the two best teams in each conference that have made it to the final game of the season. However, this year it is very tight between the two teams in the Super Bowl. This makes it very hard to have a true favorite.
While the Chiefs are slight favorites over the 49ers, the differences between the two teams is so marginal that it is not really worth mentioning.
If the 49ers do manage to win, then it will technically be an upset, but it will have nothing on the true upsets that took place earlier in the season – especially the Dolphins and Patriots game that could have been the catalyst for the Patriots’ struggles in the playoffs.
