The legalization of manufacturing the cannabis plant in Canada happened in 2018 and it’s been a bit over two years since then. Many have expected that the industry should be booming right now, but it’s not really the case.
Before we get into that, here are the things that you should know about the law surrounds this industry. Only people that are 18 and above are allowed to carry any products that are made of this plant.
However, each person is only allowed to carry a maximum of 30 grams of the plant itself or anything that is infused with it.
When it comes to growing your own plant for personal use, only up to 6 plants are allowed for each household or residence. This is a preferred option by many of its enthusiasts as they get to control how the plant is growing. It takes a lot of effort to grow a cannabis plant in great condition and the right equipment and tools are also necessary. Meanwhile, Canada is still struggling with a lot of things. Even if it has already passed the second year, there still seems to be the same problems that the market is encountering. Mackie Research Capital took a look at how the industry was doing after a year.
What it found was that the lack of supply was evident throughout the dispensaries or shops all over the country. This is one of the main reasons why people are still getting products from the black market. It’s also much cheaper to get these products illegally.
When there are supplies ready, shops have long lines and people would have to wait for a long time before they could get what they need. Some people just really don’t like that and they’d still rather buy products from friends or relatives, which can be illegal depending on where it came from.
With how the industry is doing in Canada, experts have reasons to believe that 2020 will still be tough for the businesses involved in the industry. Some even see that many owners will be forced to close their shops and some manufacturers may end up filing for bankruptcies.
Even the biggest businesses in the industry are running at loss, but they are still hopeful that things will change. In October of last year, the government finally allowed other products like edibles, ointments, and drinks to be sold to the public.
It took until December for this to happen in some territories and there are a few states that are waiting for these products to be launched. However, the same problem remained for these products. Lack of supplies is still prominent and this could be the main reason why businesses would shut down.
What some people are saying is that it’s forgivable that lack of supplies happened during the first year as it was basically a test run of the whole thing, but the same thing happening after the first year is not acceptable.
The commercial and legal manufacturers will simply have to step their games up this year to be able to survive. Supplies should be worked on and the prices should be more competitive. However, there still seems to a silver lining with everything that’s happening.
Despite the legalization of this in Canada, the country hasn’t become a stoner nation. This was what many critics have to say before the legislation passed. The number of people who use marijuana products did rise a bit, but there’s no significant negative change. There was a rise of use for people who are above 65 years of age, but there’s still no negative impact.
If the manufacturers don’t step up this year, experts think that what Canada has right now is what it will ever have. This means that the industry might remain stagnant if it won’t fail at all.
