BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Rangers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and NASA safely captured and removed fish and crabs this week from a pumped-out gate area at Canaveral Lock, which is closed for maintenance repairs through March 31.
The Army Corps of Engineers has pumped water from the Lock chamber so crews can perform inspections, replace corroded steel structure, paint, install new gate seals and repair manatee protection system components.
According to the Corps, the maintenance closure – the first in 10 years – is necessary to repair aging and damaged infrastructure and improve public and vessel safety.
The fish and crabs were transferred to another section of the Lock chamber for release into Port waters.
