Cocoa, Palm Bay and Florida Prep Earn Bids to Regional Finals in Girls Basketball; Merritt Island and Viera Advance to Final Four in Girls Soccer

Cocoa girls basketball overcomes a 15-point deficit to advance while Merritt Island wins in a penalty kick shootout

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – It was a successful night for some of Brevard’s top high school teams on both the basketball court and soccer field on Tuesday night.
In girls basketball, Cocoa overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat St. Petersburg Lakewood 51-48 in Class 4A FHSAA playoff competition, according to results posted on Maxpreps.com.
The Tigers will next face off with Lincoln Park Academy out of Fort Pierce for a spot in the state Final Four on Friday.
Also vying for a spot in the state semifinals on Friday will be the Palm Bay Pirates after they downed Ocala Vanguard 68-50. The Pirates will face Orlando Jones in a Class 5A state quarterfinal on Friday night after they downed Heritage 58-56.
Florida Prep also easily advanced to the Class 2A state quarterfinals after defeating Lakeland Victory Christian 74-18. They’ll next meet City of Life Christian Academy out of Kissimmee on Friday night.
Two area girls soccer teams advanced to the state semifinal action on Tuesday evening as well.
Viera downed St. Cloud by a 2-1 score to advance to the FHSAA Class 6A Final Four where they’ll face Lourdes Academy out of Miami on Friday night.
Elsewhere, Merritt Island earned its place in the Class 4A state semifinals after they won a penalty kick shootout 5-4 over McKeel Academy following a game where neither team scored a goal.
The Mustangs will face Ft. Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons on Friday night.
