BREVARD COUNTY  • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA  – After winning six of their last seven games, the Florida Tech softball team looked to keep the good times rolling as they welcomed Flagler to Nancy Bottge Field.

The Panthers split the hotly contested doubleheader as they won the first game, 2-1 and loss the second, 1-3.

Cheyenne NelsonMikayla WesselVanessa Rubio and Ashley Campbell all had two hits. Whitney Ellis, Nelson and Campbell were the three women to score for Tech while Victoria Szrom, Wessel and Rubio had an RBI.

Tina Velazquez Rolon did the lion’s share of the pitching as she went 1-1 on the night with 8.1 innings pitched. During her time, she allowed three runs on seven hits and had eight strikeouts. Jordan Lawlis was the first game’s starter in which she had a strong outing as she lasted for 5.2 innings and surrendered one run on three hits with three “Ks.”

The first game of the day began with Florida Tech getting an early lead as Rubio hit a slow roller that got Cheyenne Nelson across the bag. This 1-0 score held till the top of the sixth inning when the Saints evened it up.

This tie did not last long because in the bottom half of the inning, Szrom hit a ball to the warning track that earned her a double and got Ellis home from second base. This ended the scoring as the Crimson & Gray won Game One, 2-1.

The second game of the doubleheader started very differently as the Saints jumped out to a three-run lead in the top half of the first inning. Tech did bring it within two runs in the bottom of the second, as Wessel singled to left field and got Campbell across the plate.

The game stayed 1-3 until the final pitch, as both pitchers were lockdown for the final five innings.

The Panthers’ next appearance is Friday, Feb. 28, when the team takes on Lynn at Nancy Bottge Field. This will be Game One of the weekend series and the first pitch takes place at 6 p.m. ET.
