By Space Coast Daily // February 24, 2020
A person’s scent can make a good first impression and is one of the biggest aspects of a well-groomed presentation. While it may not seem apparent, your body fragrance can have a powerful effect on the way others view and remember you.
Why Should We Wear Fragrances?
- With Good Body Smell comes Confidence
Knowing that you smell good can really help you to exude an air of confidence, which makes you look more attractive to others. A European study revealed that while men rely mainly on visuals when choosing a woman, scent is, in fact, the dominant factor for women in choosing men.
Also, women have a better sense of smell, and consistently outperform men in smell tests from birth. In particular, women are sensitive towards male pheromones, which all the more explains why a person’s scent is important to women.
- Smells can Evoke Our Memories
Apart from raising your attractiveness, exuding a nice fragrance can help stimulate stronger emotional connections with others. After all, one’s sense of smell is considered the most powerful sense; the nose is, in fact, 150,000 times more sensitive than one’s vision. This is why encountering any familiar scents can immediately evoke a particular memory in which that scent is associated with.
- Makes You Look more Put Together
The importance of looking presentable exists not only in the dating scene but also in the corporate world. If you want to leave others with a good impression, it’s essential that you look the part. Spraying on a good cologne can add to your overall impression of looking put together and well-groomed.
What Are Fragrances?
To define fragrance, it is a complex combination of raw materials, which consist of extracts from either natural sources or synthetic raw substances. Firstly, perfumed oils are dissolved in a solvent type, mainly alcohol, so as to preserve the pleasant mixture of scents.
The strength of the fragrance determines how long-lasting the scent will be on your body. When a higher concentration of oils is used, the resulting fragrance is usually stronger.
However, you ought to know that the same cologne and perfume can leave a different smell on every individual. Hence, it is a journey of seemingly endless testing before you find a suitable fragrance for yourself.
How Should I Differentiate between Fragrance, Perfume, Cologne, and Toilette?
While a fragrance can come in different variations, it can be categorized into the following groups:
- Eau Fraiche
Eau Fraiche is the most diluted form of fragrance, and it generally consists of 1-3% of perfume oil within the alcohol and water mixture. As a result, it doesn’t have much lasting power and can last up to an hour.
Cologne is the oldest term for perfume. It is generally a light and refreshing scent catered towards the younger generation as it is usually made up of 2-4% of perfume oils in alcohol and water. It can last for around 2 hours.
Toilette is a light spray, and consists of 5-15% of pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. It will last for about 3 hours.
Perfume is the most commonly used term that refers to both men’s and women’s fragrance products. It contains 15-20% of pure perfume essence and is able to last for 5-8 hours.
Parfum is the most concentrated form of all fragrance types and is no doubt the most expensive. Made up of 20-30% of pure perfume essence, the substance is slightly oilier, and the smell can linger for up to 24 hours with just one application.
Life Cycle of Fragrances
Fragrances have a three-part life cycle, where each segment contains individual scents that are concocted together to exude the pleasant smell that makes you fall in love with it. Three types of notes comprise the scent of most fragrances: the top, medium, and base notes.
- Top Note
As it is the immediate scent that hits you first, it can last for as short as 15 minutes, to 2 hours. Generally, the top notes are floral scented with light notes of fruity and powdery smells and can contain spices like cinnamon.
- Medium Note
The medium note will surface once the top note clears; it can last for 3 to 5 hours after application. As the main component, the medium notes often consist of heavier and stronger floral scents including jasmine, or scents of grass and stone. It can also contain spicier scents of clove and cinnamon, as well as citrusy scents.
- Base Note
While base notes set the foundation, it is the final element that only surfaces towards the later part of the day. Lasting from 5 to 10 hours, the usual base notes consist of sandalwood, vanilla, moss, leather, smoke, and musk.
Difference between Linear and Non-Linear Fragrances
Linear fragrances refer to those that smell similar throughout the day after application, while non-linear fragrances can change as they wear off.
Often, more expensive fragrances will transition in scents over the course of the day, which can be distinguished from lower quality fragrances that smell the same throughout.
Avoid smelling like a whole store by learning how to apply your perfume properly and sufficiently. It’s best to apply it right after your bath, by spraying it 3-6 inches away from your skin.
For beginners, start with a single spray to your chest, followed by the warmer parts of your body; neck, lower jaw, wrist, forearm, inner elbow, shoulder. Take note not to spray all in one shot, but do it one at a time.
There are also certain mistakes that you should avoid committing. Don’t re-spray throughout the day, but only when required. Also, don’t rub the perfume, or spray it on your clothes, as you’ll only kill the smell.
Wearing a fragrance can be a good way to express your personality. As smell is our strongest sense, smelling good can really help you to feel more comfortable in your own skin and feel more confident when speaking to others.
Always remember that less is more, and take all the time you need to source for the right fragrances that can express you best. If you are looking for some colognes to experiment with, here are some colognes for men to give you a headstart!
