BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard was among all counties in Florida in turtle nests during 2019, according to Florida Statewide Nesting Beach Survey data.

Florida’s 2019 sea turtle nesting season was very successful as surveyors worked hard all season and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s totals are now complete.

The Statewide Nesting Beach Survey (SNBS) program documented 160,783 nests in 2019.

Surveyors found 106,652 loggerhead nests, 53,015 green turtle nests (almost a new record!), 1,105 leatherback turtle nests and 11 Kemp’s ridley nests.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s SNBS program records data on 229 beaches across Florida; however, survey efforts are not standardized over the years, please use caution when looking at these raw numbers.

But not to worry, FWRI has a complementary survey program, the Index Nesting Beach Survey, specifically designed to assess nesting trends.
