Teen Arrested After Threatening Astronaut High School Students with Gun, Police Recover Multiple Firearms Inside Car

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Two Titusville teens were arrested on Friday after one of the teens threatened Astronaut High School students Tuesday morning by driving onto high school campus and threatening students with a gun from one of the windows of a vehicle.

The incident prompted Astronaut High School to go into a lockdown on Tuesday while police worked to secure the scene.

The teen has been identified as a 16-year-old male student who was a former Astronaut High School student.

The investigation began Tuesday (Feb. 11) when the suspect drove onto the campus of Astronaut High School around 10 a.m. and waved a firearm while threatening students. The suspect then fled the scene in a stolen 2015 black Honda Accord.

No students or school staff were injured.

On Friday, Titusville Police initiated a traffic stop around 10:30 a.m. on the stolen Honda Accord that the suspect was driving.

“The suspect did not obey the officer’s commands and fled from officers where he crashed minutes later into an unmarked black Titusville Police Chevy Impala near Deleon Avenue and Pine Street,” said Amy Matthews of the Titusville Police Department.

Police say nobody was injured in the crash.

Officers quickly took the teen who displayed the firearm into custody.

Meanwhile, his passenger, identified as 18-year-old Tony Shaniel Butler Jr. from Titusville, was taken custody after leading police on a short foot pursuit.

Butler, a student at Astronaut High School, was charged with Resisting an Officer without Violence and booked into the Brevard County Jail.

During the search of the stolen vehicle used by the suspects, Titusville Police confiscated several firearms inside the vehicle.

No students or school staff were injured in the incident.

The 16-year-old teen has been transported to the Brevard County Juvenile Detention Center.

He faces multiple charges that include the following:

– Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
– 2 counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Minor
– Possession of a Firearm on School Property
– Aggravated Felony Fleeing and Eluding
– Leaving the Scene of a Traffic Crash with Damage
– Resisting an Officer without Violence
– Possession of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony
– Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle
– Disturbing School
