BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Eleven members of Brevard County Fire Rescue were promoted at a ceremony on Tuesday at the Brevard County Government Center in Viera.

“It’s one of our biggest promotions that we’ve had since I’ve been here but it means so much,” said Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer.

As part of the ceremony, those getting promoted had badges pinned on them and also took an oath.

“The fire service and law enforcement is steeped in tradition,” Schollmeyer added.

“The badge pinning means a lot to us. It goes way back to the medieval times when knights wore a coat of arms and pledged their allegiance to whoever they were under and also the oath and the oath is very important. The oath tells the people that you serve that you bear true allegiance and faith to the organization, to the people that you serve.”
