Cocoa Police Arrest Homeless Suspect For WAWA Attack That Went Viral On Social Media

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police Department arrested a 40-year-old homeless suspect on Sunday for an attack that went viral on social media earlier this month.

The suspect has been identified as John Michael Gray.

Cocoa Police officers were made aware of a video on March 3 that showed the attack that happening at Wawa in Cocoa on W. King St.

According to the investigation, several people also sent in the video to the police department’s Facebook page.

The male victim was sent to the hospital and was treated for broken ribs and a broken jaw. Patrol officers and detectives immediately began to investigate the incident.

When rescue personnel arrived on scene, they transported the male victim to the hospital, where he was treated for broken ribs and a broken jaw.

“Detectives received numerous tips including an anonymous tip from an individual who recognized Gray (suspect) in the video,” said Yvonne Martinez of the Cocoa Police Department.

“Follow up investigation yielded the suspect’s identity which was later verified by an officer who arrested John Gray in January for a charge of disorderly conduct.”

After obtaining an arrest warrant, detectives arrested Gray Sunday evening.

Gray is being charged with a felony of aggravated battery and is currently being held in the Brevard County Jail without bond.

He is set to face judge Katie Jacobus on April 14 at 1 p.m.
