Brevard Zoo Takes in Endangered Green Sea Turtle ‘Shooting Star’ Saved By Port Canaveral Workers

The center’s veterinary team amputated Shooting Star’s injured flipper and secured its skull fractures

An endangered green sea turtle found badly injured at the Port on April 6 and rescued by two Port staffers and a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputy is recuperating at the Brevard Zoo Sea Turtle Healing Center.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – An endangered green sea turtle found badly injured at the Port on April 6 and rescued by two Port staffers and a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputy is recuperating at the Brevard Zoo Sea Turtle Healing Center.

Nicknamed “Shooting Star” by staff at the center, the sea turtle suffered traumatic injuries to its left front fin and skull.

The center’s veterinary team amputated Shooting Star’s injured flipper and secured its skull fractures with wire and molding compound.

Once Shooting Star learns to swim with one flipper, it should be able to be released back into the ocean, center staffers say.

First spotted by crew members onboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Liberty, the sea turtle was pulled from the channel by Canaveral Port Authority Environmental Director Bob Musser, who is trained in turtle rescue by the Sea Turtle Preservation Society.
