BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – It’s not the Mother’s Day we’re used to. As COVID-19 still impacts our communities, this special day is being reduced to sending a greeting card or text message, or calling mom to show love and appreciation all while abiding by social distancing efforts.

For Melissa Lutz, everything the past few months pales in comparison to a Mother’s Day gift she’ll remember and cherish in her heart forever.

“I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl,” said Lutz, Emergency Department Manager at Health First’s Cape Canaveral Hospital, who has been a healthcare hero on the front lines of the COVID-19 public health crisis.

Some days can be anxious for expecting mothers, but even more so during the time of COVID-19. Luckily for Melissa, she welcomed her first child, Layla, a healthy 4-pound, 14-ounce bundle of joy, on April 30.

“She was quite the Mother’s Day surprise we weren’t expecting,” Lutz said.” She wasn’t supposed to be with us until another eight weeks, but we’re glad she’s here now.”

During her pregnancy, Lutz was a crucial part of the Cape Canaveral Hospital team when it came to patient safety and exposure. She helped to implement strategic policies and procedures for the patient triage tents at the hospital as the coronavirus spread.

Although Mother’s Day is about celebrating motherhood, it’s also a special day Melissa doesn’t take for granted, thanks to an incredible, caring group of people.

“Being able to hold her every day makes the whirlwind of giving birth in the middle of a pandemic all worth it,” Melissa said.

She says there were no pregnancy concerns or worries while working during COVID-19.

That’s because Melissa relied on her fellow associates, who gave both professional and personal advice, and helped to make her pregnancy manageable while caring for patients and braving a growing pandemic.

“It was truly a group effort from everyone in our emergency department to my OB-GYN team that made my pregnancy less stressful,” Melissa said.

“I’m extremely grateful to have a healthy baby and thankful for my fellow associates who kept us safe and loved the entire time.”
