MONEY TALKS: Atlantic Financial Advisors’ Scott L. Olson Discusses Market Impact from COVID-19

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – There is no question that good health and wealth can make life that much sweeter and healthier. To keep our bodies humming properly, we trust our medical professionals. To keep our money growing and working for us, we rely on financial advisors.
Unfortunately, while we usually check the credentials of our physicians, too many of us don’t think to do the same when it comes our Financial Advisors.
“You don’t seek help from a doctor who is not licensed, yet many of us put our trust into Financial Advisors who are not fully licensed,” said Scott Olson, president of Atlantic Financial Advisors, LLC in Melbourne.
“If your advisor is not licensed in all three major area of investments, you owe it to yourself to see what you may be missing.”
When putting your faith – and your hard-earned cash – in an advisor, doesn’t it make sense that your professional has earned the trifecta of insurance, brokerage, and advisory registrations?
Florida regulations require investment advisers to be “fiduciaries” to their clients, which means they have a fundamental obligation to act and provide investment advice that is in the best interest of their clients. A fiduciary must never exploit this position of trust and confidence for personal gain at the expense of the client.
While being a Fiduciary is an important part of the picture of a good investment advisor, it is not its entirety.
“Even if an investment advisor is expected to act as a fiduciary, if they have not attained insurance or securities licenses, they cannot offer all investments, which limits their ability to offer specific investments that may match their clients’ needs,” said Olson, whose registration as an investment advisor in 1999 makes him one of the earliest registered advisors in Brevard County.
In addition to ascertaining that your advisor is licensed, experienced and able to act in a fiduciary capacity, Olson suggests selecting a financial advisor who is not tied to a particular company or investment vehicle. Would you go to Ford dealer to buy a Lexus?
“I don’t work for a company, I work for my clients,” he said. “I don’t consider myself a salesperson, but an educator,” he added.
In fact, Olson has a reputation not just for educating the pre and post-retirees, but also professionals. The popular speaker has shared the knowledge he has gained after 40 years in the business through his continuing education courses for attorneys, CPAs and financial and estate-planning professionals in 50 states.
Clients find the unorthodox Olson a breath of fresh air in an industry that often goes by a “my way or the highway” attitude. Olson’s logo says it all. He thinks “A Little Out-of-the-Box” to help solve his clients’ goals.
Olson’s “Out-of-the-Box” approach to his clients’ well-being can be traced to an anything but an ordinary life. In fact, Olson wasn’t even supposed to be giving financial advice, or any advice, for that matter.
“Doctors told my family I wouldn’t survive,” said Olson of prognosis physicians gave after the horrific motorcycle accident Olson endured on his 23rd birthday.
After six operations and gangrene, Olson eventually lost a leg, but that didn’t stop him from later in life taking up the sport of bungee jumping. He was up for the challenge, he says. “I was tackling my fears,” he said.
He had originally wanted to become an Air Force pilot but was not tall enough, so with an academic scholarship, he instead decided to study chemical engineering. It did not go well.
“I had nightmares about molecules floating in space and not hooking up properly,” he joked.
TRAGEDY BRINGS OPPORTUNITY
Olson’s motorcycle tragedy made the local news in his native Minnesota and he was soon flooded with offers of a career. When the Equitable Life Assurance Society of NY, now AXA, wanted him on its team, he jumped at the opportunity, and in four months broke all sales records. He had found his niche.

In 1980 the Equitable encouraged him to branch out into mutual funds. He did, and the rest is history. He takes pride in consistently exceeding expectations by offering the unexpected.
“I work with many investments that most advisors may not have access to,” he said.
Olson’s firm, Atlantic Financial Advisors, LLC, provides a wide variety of investments options for clients looking to map out their financial future.
“We offer stocks, bonds and funds like many other advisors, but we prefer to also work with the money managers who actively manage our clients’ portfolios. We look for those who historically have track records of beating the S&P 500 and in some cases with less risk.”
Olson licenses and registrations enable him to also offer closed-end funds, UIT’s (Unit Investment Trusts), REIT’s (Real Estate Investment Trusts), Leasing Programs, Oil & Gas partnerships and royalty programs.
Given the seemingly endless options of financial products available, choosing those that best meet the clients’ individual needs can be complicated. Olson makes suggestions only after a thorough assessment of each client’s specific situation.
This process helps define the right financial products to meet short and long-term goals, identifies roadblocks or gaps and continually monitors the plan to ensure it continues to meet the clients’ changing needs.
Financial planning is about more than preparing for retirement. It’s about working to achieve short- and long-term goals, while protecting our assets, income and estate planning for our family.
