Florida Tech’s Golf Trio Sam Avey, Kyle Decenzo and Evan Thompson Receive All-America Scholar Honors

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Three members of the 2019-20 Florida Tech golf team have been recognized as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the GCAA.
Representing the Crimson & Gray on the All-America Scholar list are Sam Avey, Kyle Decenzo, and Evan Thompson.
This marks the second straight season that Decenzo received the honor.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must:
■ Be a sophomore, junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate’s Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA.
■ Have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA.
■ Maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. in 2019-20, participate in 40% of the team’s competitive rounds.
Avey, a sophomore out of Trinidad and Tobago, recorded a stroke-average of 76.29 over 14 rounds in 2019-20, while boasting a 3.58 GPA as a finance major.
Decenzo, a senior and local product out of Viera, Florida, had an average score of 74.45 while competing in 20 rounds this past season. He owns a 3.526 GPA as a business major.
Thompson, a junior and dual-sport athlete in golf and football out of Clermont, Fla., earned a stroke-average of 74.36 over 11 rounds. He had a 3.82 GPA while majoring in entrepreneurship.
It was a record-setting year for the award as 614 student-athletes earned the title of All-America Scholar, the most since the award’s inception in 1982.
Of the 614 honorees, 376 players were Division I selections, 99 in DII, 108 in DIII, 18 from NAIA, and 12 from NJCAA. 2020 marks the first year in which Sophomores are eligible for the award.
