BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – On this day, 55 years ago, Gemini IV launched from Cape Canaveral Launch Pad 19.

On this mission, astronaut Ed White became the first American to perform a spacewalk.

This achievement evened the “score” with Soviet human spaceflight achievements. P

Project Gemini would go on to set many new human spaceflight records, but, more importantly, it proved the technology and the skills needed to make the Apollo missions to the Moon successful.
