BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech volleyball team has been recognized by the United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association as a recipient of the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for their academic success during the 2019-20 season.

This is the fifth time in the last six years that Florida Tech has received the Team Academic Award from the AVCA. The Panthers are one of nine programs in the Sunshine State Conference to reel in the honor.

A record total of 1,313 teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award this year, topping last year’s record by almost 200 teams.

The award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

Florida Tech posted a team GPA of 3.587 in 2019-20. The Panthers’ GPA of 3.741 in Spring 2020 is the team’s highest semester GPA during head coach Amy O’Brien’s nine years at the helm of the program.

“I’m very proud of my team for earning our highest GPA since I’ve been coaching, especially during one of the most challenging and unique times of their careers,” said coach Amy O’Brien. (Florida Tech image)

“I’m very proud of my team for earning our highest GPA since I’ve been coaching, especially during one of the most challenging and unique times of their careers,” said O’Brien.

“I put a huge emphasis on the importance of doing well in the classroom, and my girls went above and beyond. With already hectic schedules they found extra time to study long hours in the library in order to perform well on their exams and in labs. It goes to show how committed, versatile, and intelligent these girls are. I’m very happy and proud of them.”
